| Description | Base of the colossal statue of Apolo on Delos, view from west. Against the north wall the Naxians erected a colossal statue of Apollo, depicted as a kouros. Here started the Sacred Way. The statue was about four times life size. On the western side of base is anscription: The Naxians to Apollo. - May have been written in -400/-300, when statue was re-erected after it fell down, taking with it the Palm tree of Nicias (Nikias). On eastern side of the base is epigram: I am of the same marble, both statue and base. Left at a distance is Temple of Delians (Graet Temple of Apollo). Its constructions began on the founding of the Athenian League, -479. |
